How To Significantly Increase Your Focus

how to significantly increase your focus

Have you experienced sitting on your desk all day trying to concentrate on doing a task and yet your mind has kept on wandering to other things?

And no matter what you do, you find that you just can’t focus on the thing that you have to accomplish.

Everybody has been in this kind of situation and all too often, this can result to poor performance or even to procrastination.

So how can you make sure that you stay focused and get things done? Ever wondered how you can improve your focus?

Here are very helpful advices on how you can keep your mind on your tasks and goals.

1. Create A Good Atmosphere

Whatever task that you have to do or goal that you have to achieve, it can be pretty hard to stay focused if your environment is all wrong. For instance, if your goal is to graduate from law school at the top of your class, it can be hard to accomplish that if you live with people who always party and have no concern about their studies.

Because no matter how you want to stay focused, the people around you and the environment that you have at present can make that very difficult for you. You can get distracted easily. The best thing to do is to find a location that is conducive to studying as that can greatly help you to concentrate on school work.

In addition, once you have found a good environment for doing your task, there are other things that you have to consider.

  1. Comfortable

Make the space that you will be working in as comfortable for you as possible. Needless to say, it can be hard to focus on anything if your chair or desk is causing you back pain or any form of discomfort. It can also help to work in a well-ventilated room.

  2. Use Visual Reminders

For some people, visual reminders are very effective so you can try this too. Place a “goals board” above your desk or just a simple Post-It can do the trick. You can also put up motivational posters in your room to keep your mind from drifting to other things. Find one that is specifically pertaining to your own goal.

  3. Remove Distractions

Get rid of all things in the room that can distract you from your task at hand. These can include the television, comic books, gadgets, etc.

2. Proper State of Mind

One of the best methods to stay focused on your goals at hand is to have the correct mindset. You should have a strong will and the right amount of determination to finish or achieve the task that you have set your mind on. To keep you in the proper state of mind to accomplish your goal, remember to ask yourself these questions and to answer them as honestly as possible.

  1. Why should you accomplish this task? Why are you doing it? What is the reason?
  2. What are the consequences if you don’t accomplish it? Will there be great rewards for you after or are you just doing it to comply with requirements forced on you? Will you be punished for not accomplishing your task?

Your answers to these questions can help you obtain the strong will and the strong determination to stay focused on your task.

In addition, it would also help you to have the proper mindset and keep focused if you prioritize. Here’s how:

  1. Don’t do many things all at once

Accomplish your tasks one at a time. After accomplishing the first one, then you can move on to the next.

  2. Make a list of tasks that you have to do

Put the most important one as the first, and then write tasks with middle importance, then finally the least urgent. Follow this order of what tasks to accomplish and resist the temptation to do two things at the same time or to skip on to the next without accomplishing the first. To stay focused, there should be discipline, organization, and order.

3. Don’t Neglect Your Nutrition

Sometimes, when we are so immersed in something, we forget to eat properly and drink the right amount of water. You may have heard of people suddenly collapsing of hunger or dehydration in the middle of work and this can also happen to you if you neglect to eat properly.

  1. Remember to eat your breakfast, lunch, and dinner

This will give you the energy to stay focused on your work. You may find it very hard to concentrate on a task if your stomach is growling. Also, your brain may not function well as your body gives off strong signals of hunger and dehydration. You can also feel weakness and lethargy.

  2. Eat healthy foods

This cannot be said enough and yet many individuals still think that they can focus on their tasks effectively with fast food or processed food for lunch.

  3. Drink plenty of water

Avoid getting dehydrated in the midst of your work. Your body needs enough fluids in order to function at its best.

4. Get Enough Sleep

Studies have long established the effects of sleep deprivation on our focus and work performance. If you failed to get at least 7 hours of sleep last night, you may feel exhausted and sluggish the next day. Your body is also affected as its sleep cycle has been disturbed and this can result to feelings of drowsiness and heaviness of the body. Consequently, you may have a difficult time focusing on your tasks if your feel very tired and sleepy.

5. Pace Yourself

Know when it’s time to take a break and when to continue plowing in. Our body and mind needs rest too in order to function efficiently. Overworking the body and the mind can be very unhealthy and can result to serious troubles later on. While some people may have the misconception that they can focus better if they work long hours on the project, this is not advisable. The body has a time clock of when it can function at its best and when it needs to rest. Here are some tips that you can follow:

  1. Take 5-minute breaks every hour to maximize efficiency and to help you stay focused.
  2. If possible, limit your work to 8 hours a day.
  3. Work on bigger tasks in the morning.
  4. If you work at night, make sure that you get enough rest during the day.

Improving your focus and getting things done is not at all impossible with the right attitude. If you find that you tend to procrastinate, there could be factors affecting your ability to focus. Just follow the advice that were mentioned in this article and enjoy a better concentration on your goals.
